What is the AMC 8? A parent’s guide.

If your child is strong at math and someone has mentioned “the AMC,” here’s everything you actually need to know — what it is, who it’s for, how it’s scored, and how to help them prepare, in plain language.

The short version

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute math competition for students in grade 8 and below, run once a year by the Mathematical Association of America. It rewards problem-solving and clever thinking, not memorized curriculum — which is exactly why it’s so valuable for a bright child who finds school math easy.

What the AMC 8 actually is

The AMC 8 — the American Mathematics Competition 8 — is the entry point to the most respected math-competition pathway in the United States. It’s a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice exam taken by students in grade 8 and below, administered each year by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

What surprises most parents is that it looks almost nothing like a school math test. There’s very little that’s purely computational. Instead, each question is a small puzzle that rewards seeing the structure of a problem — spotting a pattern, choosing a clever approach, reasoning to an answer. A child can be excellent at their grade-level curriculum and still find the AMC 8 unfamiliar at first, because it asks for a different kind of thinking.

It’s not about how much math your child knows — it’s about how well they can use it.

Who it’s for

Any student in grade 8 or below who is 14.5 years old or younger on competition day can take the AMC 8. In practice, it’s ideal for:

  • Students who finish their school math quickly and want a real challenge
  • Bright younger students (grades 5–7) building competition experience early
  • Children heading toward selective schools or STEM-focused futures
  • Any child who enjoys puzzles and asking “why does that work?”

It’s also the natural first step toward the AMC 10 and beyond — the pathway that leads, for the strongest students, to the AIME and the USA Math Olympiad.

When it runs

The AMC 8 is held once a year, in a fixed testing window set by the MAA. Registration happens through schools and approved competition managers beforehand — not by sign-up on the day — so the most important thing for a parent is to find out early whether your child’s school offers it, or locate a nearby competition manager who does. Dates shift slightly year to year, so always confirm the current window on the MAA’s official site.

How scoring works

Each of the 25 questions is worth one point, for a total out of 25. Crucially, there is no penalty for a wrong answer — so it’s always worth a sensible guess on questions your child can’t fully solve. No negative marking, no partial credit.

Because the score reflects how far a student gets rather than a pass mark, the AMC 8 gives a genuinely useful picture of a child’s problem-solving level — and a clear, motivating goal to improve against year on year.

The part that matters

How to help your child prepare

Here’s the mistake most families make: they treat AMC prep as drilling past papers until the child can pattern-match. It doesn’t work, because the whole point of the competition is to throw unfamiliar problems at students. You can’t memorize your way through it.

What actually builds AMC ability is the reverse order:

  • Build the foundations competitions draw on — number theory, counting and probability, geometry, and algebra — more deeply than school covers them.
  • Then use past AMC 8 papers, not as the whole plan, but as sharpening: for timing, exam temperament, and exposure to how questions are framed.
  • Encourage your child to sit with a hard problem rather than rush to the answer — the struggle is where the learning happens.

Past papers are freely available and are the best resource for seeing the real style of the exam. Working through them slowly, understanding why each solution works, does far more than racing through dozens.

The other thing that helps enormously is the right peer group. Bright competition students learn fastest alongside others at their level, working problems together — hard to replicate alone at a kitchen table.

Is the AMC 8 hard?

Challenging by design — that’s the point; it stretches strong students. A child doesn’t need all 25 to have a great experience; steady year-on-year improvement is the real goal.

My child is only in grade 5 — too young?

Not at all. Many strong students start in grades 5–7 to build experience before it “counts” in grade 8. Earlier exposure at the right level is an advantage.

Do they need a calculator?

No — calculators aren’t permitted. The problems are designed to be solved with reasoning, not computation.

How is this different from school math?

School math tests whether a student can apply taught procedures. The AMC 8 tests whether they can solve problems they’ve never seen — a genuinely different, highly valuable skill.
